The resonant and soulful harmonics of a well-tuned bagpipe can touch the hearts of many at a funeral, and although an unfortunate time to be requiring a piper, it is a suitable one nonetheless. Below are a few suggestions as to where the piper can be involved.
Burial:
As the congregation arrive for the service,
For the arrival of the hearse and to lead the coffin into the service,
Before, during, or after the reflection,
As the coffin is lead back out to the hearse after the service,
As the coffin is carried to the graveside,
During the lowering of the coffin into the grave,
Piping into the distance as the coffin has be lowered.
Cremation:
As the congregation arrive for the service,
For the arrival of the hearse and to lead the coffin into the crematorium,
Before, during, or after the reflection,
When the curtain is drawn,
At the end of the service as the congregation exit the crematorium.
The traditional Lament to be played is "The Flowers of the Forest", however other suitable tunes include: "Amazing Grace", "Mull of Kintyre", and "The Sleeping Tune". Some example recordings can be found on our site here.
